ACADEMIC
PROGRAMS FOR FACULTY
 |
Each spring, Newsplex
offers seminars for faculty. Each fall, we host an
academic conference related to convergence. Looking
to the future, we are working on a convergence class
that will be offered via the Internet and that will
be co-taught by partner institutions. To prepare students
for the newsrooms of the future, journalism educators
themselves need to understand new media concepts and
convergence techniques.
The spring seminars have been
offered annually since 2003. Journalism educators from
throughout the country have come to Newsplex to learn
about the latest techniques and software as well as
to share ideas on teaching convergence. For more information
on what is being planned for the spring of 2008, contact
Augie Grant at augie@sc.edu or

The Newsplex team can bring its training
to you or some schools have brought their students
to us. Either way, we can bring convergence to your
faculty and students.
For example, the Newsplex team journeyed to Milwaukee
to do a weekend seminar for the journalism faculty
at Marquette University. Hampton University brought
a group of students and faculty to Newsplex for a multi-day
training seminar. We also trained a group of students
from Western Kentucky University. At a time when so
much is expected of journalism educators, the Newsplex
team can help.
If you are interested in booking a seminar in Newsplex
or bringing our training to your campus, let us know.

Each fall,
the USC School of Journalism sponsors a major academic
conference related to convergence. This fall's theme
is "Convergence and Society: Media Ownership,
Control, and Consolidation." Gannett Corporation
Chairman, President, and CEO Craig Dubow will speak
and Gannett Vice President of New Media Content Jennifer
Carroll will do a separate presentation on the company's
News Centers.

| Since the media
world is changing so quickly – and since academic budgets
often are limited – several schools have expressed
an interest in an undergraduate convergence course
taught out of Newsplex via distance ed. That idea is
about to become a reality. We are working on a curriculum
for a class that would be co-taught with partner institutions.
We would provide lectures and suggested assignments.
Our partner schools would tailor those assignments
to their needs and resources. In the end, the partner
school would grade he projects. The tentative launch
for this class will be Fall 2008. If you are interested,
we'd love to hear from you. Please e-mail Randy Covington,
Newsplex Director at randy.covington@sc.edu |
