ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Academic Courses
Training the next generation of journalists often starts before they enter college. Many journalists trace the origins of their careers back to their days in school media. For that reason, we see great potential in bringing the concepts of convergence to high and middle schools and perhaps even to elementary pupils, as well.

Personalized Training

One of the more innovative Newsplex projects has been our relationship with Richland Northeast High School in Columbia and its parent school district. Richland Northeast faculty and students have undergone training in Newsplex. In fact, the school has built its own version of Newsplex, which they call CavPlex. (The school is known as the Cavaliers).

In CavPlex, students create the student newspaper, yearbook, slide shows that are seen on hallway monitors and a daily television newscast. When students enter the school journalism program, they are introduced to all aspects of journalism before they are allowed to specialize in any specific area. As part of our work with Richland Northeast, we also have trained teachers in the middle and elementary schools that feed it. Visit CavPlex Web site>

We currently are seeking funding to expand the high school journalism initiative in partnership with Richland Northeast.
