| In addition
to our work with some of the leading news organizations
in the world, the Newsplex training modules and knowledge
base also are available to students in the USC School
of Journalism. We teach a course in Newsplex on convergent
journalism. Students in J305, Mass Media Telecommunications,
learn to do multi-media stories, create online communities
and produce longer-term projects. According to students,
the class is one of the most enjoyable in the School. |
2004 Election
Connection
Also from
time to time, students work in Newsplex on special
projects. Probably the best known is the 2004 Election
Connection. Sponsored by Cingular (now AT&T Wireless)
and working with other leading journalism programs
such as Georgia, Columbia University, UC Berkeley
and several others, students created a mobile weblog
covering the 2004 race for the U.S. Presidency.
Students from USC covered the Democratic National Convention,
worked in Newsplex and reported on the election itself.
The Election Connection has been written up all over
the world and CNN called it "a surprise hit" among
the bloggers at the Democratic National Convention. Visit

Biker Week
Another student project focused on the annual
Biker Week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The work was done
in conjunction with the Media General-owned newspaper
and TV station in nearby Florence, S.C. Working side
by side with professionals, the students wrote columns
for the newspaper, took photographs, shot video and
created multi-media content for a special Media General
Web site. Visit

The Augusta Chronicle
Another student project assisted The Augusta Chronicle,
owned by Newsplex Directorate member Morris Communications,
and WJBF TV, owned by Media General. The subject was
soul singer James Brown. The broadcast journalism students
did video packages on Brown's career and impact on
Augusta. Read
